Every year, Global Ties KC invests in our Youth Diplomat alumni by taking a small group of students beyond the classroom and into places where leadership, diplomacy, and public service happen every day.
This June, Global Ties KC sponsored right students to travel to Washington, D.C. for an immersive three-day leadership excursion. Through conversations with government leaders, policy experts, and nonprofit professionals, students explored how decisions are made, how relationships shape our world, and where they might fit into that picture.
Democracy in Action – America250 Experiences
As the United States prepares to commemorate its 250th anniversary, students explored exclusive America250 exhibits that examined the evolution of American democracy. Rather than simply learning history, they were encouraged to think critically about how democratic institutions continue to evolve—and what role future generations will play in strengthening them.
The experience sparked conversations about civic responsibility, leadership, and the importance of informed participation in public life.
Diplomacy Beyond the Headlines – Sports Diplomacy Meeting
One of the highlights of the trip was meeting with the Director of the U.S. Department of State’s Sports Diplomacy Office.
At a time when the United States is preparing to host the world, students learned how sports can strengthen international relationships, create opportunities for cultural exchange, and build trust between countries. The major takeaway was that sports diplomacy happens whether governments are involved are not, and that has been the case for over a century.
The discussion challenged students to think differently about diplomacy. It’s not limited to embassies or world leaders; it happens through education, culture, athletics, business, and people-to-people connections every day.
Understanding How Change Happens – Advocacy & Congressional Meetings
Students also explored the role advocacy plays in shaping foreign policy through a meeting with the United States Global Leadership Coalition.
On Capitol Hill, they met with congressional staff to learn how constituent voices influence decision-making and how elected officials engage with the communities they represent.
For many students, it was their first opportunity to step inside the halls where national policy is debated and to ask questions directly to the people who help shape it.

Leadership excursions are one way Global Ties KC continues investing in Youth Diplomat alumni long after their program concludes.
These experiences expand students’ professional networks, introduce them to careers they may never have considered, and help them develop the confidence to navigate an increasingly interconnected world. They return home with new perspectives, stronger leadership skills, and a clearer understanding that global engagement isn’t something reserved for people in Washington—it’s something they can help shape right here in Kansas City.
