The Youth Diplomats Institute experience is one of hands-on learning, networking, and curiosity. Global Ties KC works to provide future leaders in the global workforce with the confidence to pursue top positions in their chosen field, while always maintaining a cultural curiosity and empathy. To accomplish this, we have facilitated one-on-one interactions with their peers from Africa, coordinated a meeting with young professionals in NATO, conducted professional skill building workshops, and instituted a community action project.
With our commitment to real world learning, Global Ties KC is moving one step further and taking an intimate group of Youth Diplomats to Washington D.C. in August 2022 for a leadership excursion. Since none of the chosen participants have been to Washington D.C. before, this experience will introduce the students to democracy and civic engagement in action in our nation’s capital. Activities will include a networking reception with congressional staffers and community leaders, all with a tie to Kansas City; a young professional’s panel to discover unique perspectives and opportunities in a variety of sectors; visits to key cultural institutions with an intentional debrief on the effects of Federalism; and time to engage with one another as like-minded peers and a long-time network.
Chosen participants were competitively selected from an application process, which was open to all Youth Diplomats who have participated since 2019. The 9 students were chosen due to their enthusiasm, the likelihood they will use the trip to further themselves or their community upon returning home, and their lack of previous D.C. travel. The participants represent the diversity of Youth Diplomats, including members from the in-person and virtual cohorts, representing 9 different schools throughout Kansas and Missouri – spanning over 130 miles.
