This spring, we ran an incredibly successful in-depth program for local high school students. The Youth Ambassadors for Sports Diplomacy (YASD) program began as a spark of an idea from a former Youth Diplomat and grew into a dynamic, immersive initiative shaped by students from across the region that drew over 50 participants from 21 schools. By amplifying youth voices and cultivating global awareness through the exploration of regional World Cup 2026 preparations, the program empowered the next generation to lead with curiosity, Heartland Pride, and a sense of shared responsibility to build upon the legacy World Cup preparations and events will leave behind
Youth Ambassadors met with representatives from KC2026, Populous, The Independence Fire Department, Arts KC, The National WW1 Museum, The Kansas City Sports Commission & Foundation and the City of Leawood and were thrilled to hear from KCMO Mayor Pro Tem Ryana Parks-Shaw, Chief of Staff to Mayor and CEO, Unified Government of Wyandotte County and KCK Frank Ramirez to close out the series. Program sessions examined why Kansas City was chosen to host the 2026 World Cup and how the region is preparing—from transportation and safety upgrades to Fan Fest, neighborhood celebrations, and support for local artists and businesses. The series concluded by highlighting how these investments in infrastructure, urban renewal, and public safety will elevate Kansas City globally while delivering lasting benefits to residents and businesses.
Stakeholders involved in the meetings noted that youth perspectives bring a long-term lens to planning efforts—one that prioritizes sustainability, community pride, and equitable outcomes. The Youth Ambassadors built skills in communication and public leadership through networking and formal panel discussion participation. More importantly, they saw firsthand that their voices matter—and that their contributions will influence decisions that affect their future. By connecting young people directly with professionals shaping the region’s World Cup strategy, the Youth Ambassadors for Sports Diplomacy program bridged the gap between civic institutions and the next generation of leaders.
Global Ties KC proudly empowered YASD graduates to be knowledgeable, actively engaged ambassadors for the Heartland, ready to interact with visitors from all over the world. We are immensely grateful to our program sponsor, Polsinelli Law Firm, and thankful for generous support from session hosts Populous, The National WW1 Museum and the Greater KC Chamber of Commerce, and to all the prestigious speakers and high-level professionals who generously volunteered their time to inform and engage the Youth Ambassadors!
