Justin Preston Awarded the 2024 Barbara Dolci International Studies Scholarship
We are thrilled to announce that the 2024 Global Ties KC’s Barbara Dolci International Studies Scholarship has been awarded to Justin Preston, a sophomore at Ottawa University. This scholarship, designed to support studies in an international field, study abroad opportunities, student research, or service with international travel, is awarded to students pursuing opportunities related to international affairs and public or community service.
A Commitment to Global Engagement
Justin, a Business Economics major and member of the Men’s Bowling team at Ottawa University, embodies the global mindset that Global Ties KC seeks to promote. Justin’s commitment to global engagement is inspired by his Filipino heritage. His passion for international experiences was further enriched by a mission trip to Guatemala with Ottawa University’s Gwartney Institute, where he helped build homes and bridges in local villages. Additionally, his active involvement in the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, the Ottawa Athletics Student-Athlete Leadership Team, and the USAAI National Bowling Team showcases his dedication to leadership and community building. Justin’s academic excellence has also earned him a spot on the Dean’s Honor Roll. During the 2024 Heartland Pop-Up, our annual community engagement and fundraiser event, Justin expressed his gratitude to Global Ties KC and all who have made this scholarship opportunity possible. His plans for using the scholarship funds include furthering his international studies and participating in future global service projects. Scholarship Selection Process and Other Opportunities For Students
The selection process for this scholarship was carefully overseen by our leadership team and members of the board of directors, ensuring that a candidate with an outstanding commitment to citizen diplomacy was chosen. Although we had several applicants with impressive backgrounds, Justin’s dedication to cultural immersion and global service made him stand out as an exemplary recipient. Global Ties KC is committed to providing students with international opportunities at every level. One of the ways we do this is through scholarships, as well as other initiatives including internships, and the Heartland Youth Diplomats Institute, where students learn, at no cost, real-world professional skills with themes in diplomacy and global affairs.
